Diversity and inclusion is not just about race. It is also not just about other politically “hot topics,” like gender, sexual orientation, ability, and socioeconomic class. Diversity and inclusion is about people, ALL people: different work styles, educational backgrounds, ages, and people of different races and genders.
Inclusion is about creating an organization where all people matter; where everyone can bring their full self to the organization. People whose hopes, dreams, and fears all matter. Sometimes these people work within your organization, sometimes they are members of the public, communities, customers. None of their needs can be ignored when cultivating authentic relationships and transparent processes. We cannot simply extract the part of the person or community that suits our needs. Inclusion means acknowledging, respecting, and working with the whole person.
